A trading town with busy households
Puliyangudi is best known across Tamil Nadu for its lemon market, and like most trading towns it has busy households where the kitchen rarely rests. Large families, early mornings and constant cooking mean the kitchen here needs to be tough first and beautiful second. Ideally it should be both.
Kitchens that work all day
We often meet families in Puliyangudi whose old kitchen has a granite slab on brick supports, with open shelves underneath. It works, but it collects dust, attracts pests and hides nothing. Converting that to modular cabinets with drawers and shutters keeps the same sturdy granite feel while making the kitchen far cleaner and easier to organise.
What we usually recommend here
Aluminium base cabinets under a granite countertop: strong, pest-proof and easy to clean after heavy cooking. Tandem drawers for vessels instead of deep shelves, a tall unit for provisions and a sturdy bottle pull-out near the hob. In bedrooms, hinged wardrobes with lofts use the full ceiling height.
Cleaning after heavy cooking
Daily frying and tempering leave a thin layer of oil on every surface near the hob. Wood-grain and matte aluminium shutters wipe clean with warm soapy water. Avoid steel scrubbers and harsh powders, which scratch any finish. Once a week, pull out the drawers nearest the hob and wipe the runners. It keeps the soft-close action smooth for years and takes five minutes.
